Dopo mesi di preparazione fisica, di gite, di allenamenti, di vaccini, di notti passate sulle cartine ed a studiare siti web e guide. Dopo settimane di elenchi di cose da mettere nello zaino, di conoscenti che ti chiedono “ma tu non dovevi andare in Africa”, di chiacchierate con amici che ti chiedono con la luce negli occhi cosa farai di preciso e come ti sei organizzato.

Devo ancora partire ma già mi sento a metà dell’avventura. Non si prepara in due giorni una scalata ad una montagna di quasi 6.000 metri. La scalata del Kilimangiaro “the tallest freestanding mountain of the world”. Certo ci sono montagne più alte ma sono sempre inserite, vedi l’Himalaya, in una catena di altrettanto imponenti montagne. Qui il caso è molto diverso perché il Kilimangiaro si staglia con i suoi 5895 metri al di sopra di una terra pressoché piatta come la Tanzania.

Da una catena di mail fra amici senza quasi pensarci stavo acquistando i biglietti aerei per Nairobi. Poi organizzare le ferie dal lavoro, fare le visite mediche e le vaccinazioni necessarie per l’Africa.

Preparare il proprio fisico e l’attrezzature necessaria per affrontare otto giorni e sette notti in un clima che varia dalla foresta tropicale fino alla vetta innevata spazzata da forti venti e con temperature che raggiungono i 20 gradi sotto zero. Il tutto tenendo presente che a seimila metri di altezza l’aria è talmente rarefatta che i nostri polmoni faticano a riempirsi e questo comporta che ricevano quasi la metà dell’ossigeno che riceverebbero se fossimo in riva al mare. Ma anche qui la natura riesce a stupirci ed il nostro corpo aumenta i battiti cardiaci ed inizia a produrre più globuli rossi per trasportare meglio quel poco ossigeno che a disposizione. Tutto questo in linea teorica perché si sale molto in fretta e se il corpo non dovesse riuscire ad acclimatarsi altrettanto in fretta si finisce con il soffrire di AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Per evitare questo il mantra delle guide Chagga che accompagnano nel parco naturale del Kilimangiaro è Pole Pole ovvero Piano Piano.
